Over the last six weeks, we have ran the Play Leaders programme at S S Simon & Jude C of E Primary School in Bolton with Year 5 students, aged between 9 and 10 years old.
The Play Leaders programme is designed so that young children can be taught how to lead fun physical activities for children during their lunch time. In doing so, the children have their opportunities to be active during the school day, widened as a result of the programme. As a result, the children develop a range of positive character qualities.
The children were asked what they thought of the Play Leaders course and here are some of their answers:
‘I loved organising the games myself and choosing my own activities.’
‘I like the way that we had to work together – good sportsmanship.’
‘I enjoyed learning how to teach (it’s hard isn’t it!).’
‘I enjoyed thinking about skills and learning different ones.’
The children participating in the Play Leaders programme said that they thoroughly enjoyed the course and would love to do it again. They all agreed that they would recommend it to other schools.
The Year 5 teacher at S S Simon & Jude C of E Primary School, Miss Ashcroft, have the following feedback on the Play Leader programme, explaining the benefits and positives from the six week course.
‘I thought they got a lot out of the course and will make sure that they use some of the teaching skills they learned from you both in future PE lessons and at lunch time.’
‘From a professional point of view, I felt that the interaction with the children was lovely – they responded well to instructions and ideas and it was always pitched at the right level.’
‘Thanks to Rob Messina and the Bolton Wanderers Community Trust for the past few weeks – it’s been great.’
