Wanderers Soccer Schools Development Squad progressing into study programme

The idea of our Under-16s Development programme is to progress and develop our players into becoming potential scholars at the Bolton Wanderers Academy and other professional clubs in the North West region.

This year, two of our Under-16s have signed scholarships with Sky Bet League Two side, Morecambe.

We have also taken on a number of players who have recently spent time in professional academy football, with the likes of Oldham Athletic, Accrington Stanley and Stoke City.

The nature of this cycle offers the lads on our Development programme the chance to keep developing in a professional environment before looking at linking up with academies at professional football clubs.

Our Under-16s have spent this season training at the Eddie Davies Academy – the official training facility of the Bolton Wanderers First Team.

This season, we have played a number of games against other Development Centres and professional academies including, Bolton Wanderers, Accrington Stanley, Salford City, Airbus UK Broughton and Connah’s Quay.

Our group have recently had the exciting news that they will be continuing their football development as part of the Wanderers Soccer Schools Development Centre for the next two years, making up our first ever Under-18s side.

Alongside the football, the lads will also begin a two-year study programme which will ensure academic and educational development as well as ‘on-the-field’ development.

Dave Walton, the Head of Football Development at Wanderers Soccer Schools said: ‘The Under-16s is a brand new layer to the Wanderers Soccer School Development programme, starting back in September 2018.’

‘We decided to create a platform for released academy players and talented grassroots players who have potential to become scholars at professional clubs around the country.’

‘It’s been an honour to coach such fantastic individuals that are so driven towards football and learning. The Under-16s have had fantastic opportunities this season playing against professional academies across the country and having the chance to showcase their abilities as well as showcasing them to Bolton Wanderers.’

‘We have managed to push two of our players onto scholarships at Morecambe FC, with a number of boys also going on trial at professional clubs.’

‘We are now pleased to announce the Under-16s will be continuing with us all the way to Under-18s providing our players with an education pathway with potential to continue into university, building on our Soccer School philosophy which is to develop the person as well as the player.’
